Sleep Disorder Society Malaysia is a non-profit NGO founded in 2012 mainly in response to the increase of awareness of clinical sleep health. The first president and chairman was Professor Dr. Syed Hassan Syed Ahmad Almashoor, a Professor of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Selayang Campus, in Kuala Lumpur.
Over the next few years, the society has broadened its members to include academic and clinical specialists, particularly pulmonologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, otorhinolaryngologists, neurologists, paediatricians, and other healthcare professionals including nurses and sleep technologists. SDSM now has an inclusive approach to all specialists related to sleep medicine and sleep research.
SDSM membership is open to individuals in sleep-related practices, sleep research, or those with a special interest in sleep health. Members are entitled to a discounted rate for attending society’s conferences and have a great opportunity to present work during the conference, including eligibility to apply for travel grants.
The society is actively promoting sleep disorder awareness among the public by organizing various health education programs such as public forums, sleep health talks, roadshows, and community-level activities during the World Sleep Day celebration which falls in March every year.
